Film Proposal: In Waves 

Logline: Following the loss of his child, a once passionate surfer must confront a daunting horror that manifests itself as the sea.

Feature Synopsis: Set along a mysterious beach, a couple- Ben and Andrea -mourn the loss of their child and begin closing up shop on a surfing school that has fallen to disarray. With their marriage in collapse ,and school abandoned, Ben decides to ride the waves one last time; However, he is met with a disturbing surprise when his living child is found floating amongst the raging sea. With their child back in their arms, Ben and Andrea must confront their beliefs on parenthood, mourning, and the inexplicable cosmic horror that lies within the sea.

Comparative Films: “In Waves” can be compared to the following successful films:

  1. It Follows (2014) - “In Waves” explores a mysterious threat similar to that of 2014’s “It Follows” where our main characters must confront what feels like an omnipresent, yet inexplicable, force who’s intentions are unclear. 

  2. The Bababdook (2014) - it shares the exploration of the mourning and healing process, with characters who question their ability to be parents and confront the trials of grief and acceptance. 

  3. Hereditary (2018) - similar to Ari Aster’s 2018 film, “In Waves” explores the complex and dynamic relationship of a family forced into extreme pressure as escalating events test their bond.
